Alexander the
Great vs. Darius III
In honor of the 20th anniversary of
the printing of the Warhammer Ancient Battles Alexander the Great
supplement,
I offer this photo essay that mimics
the famous "Issus" mosaic. Dedicated to all who had fun reading the
book and playing the game, and
to all
who helped create this enduring legacy of WAB.
Darius III had no luck against
Alexander the Great. He was defeated in battle on land, in famous
sieges, and at sea. The rising
star of the tiny kingdom of Macedonia was too much for old,
corrupt, and bloated Persia.
Nothing could Alexander's
aggressive charges, so Darius ran away to try over again.
Eventually Darius' army deserted
him in flight, and he came to a sad end on a dusty road on the way
to Afghanistan
Alexander's empire expanded to
India. Then he suddenly died and his new empire fragmented.
Such is the fate of empires and emperors, I reckon.
Darius did not have enough luck and Alexander did not have enough
time.
But maybe he was lucky because more time might have
allowed him to misbehave and tarnish his fame and glory.
